Empowered by her mentors, Sokmean has excelled in her leadership role at the Phnom Penh International Airport. The flight coordinator position is vital when it comes to organizing all daily ground handling services: it calls for preparing, constantly updating, and relaying flight information to airport personnel to ensure staff are aware of all aircraft activity.
As a flight coordinator at Phnom Penh International Airport, Thay Sokmean’s many job responsibilities have made her an important figure, and have allowed her to hone several skills, including her attention to detail, flexibility, patience and the ability to work under pressure.
“What I like about this job is it gives me more knowledge about aircraft, which is something I cannot learn from other companies,” Sokmean said, adding that she thrives in her fast-paced position and is proud to fill the role. “I also really enjoy being able to communicate with different kinds of people from various nations.”
Sokmean’s job requires a high level of person-to-person interaction and effective leadership, and she said that the warm, welcoming environment at Phnom Penh International Airport has helped her foster her own natural leadership abilities.
“My supervisors and colleagues have given me a great environment since the beginning,” she said. “They share all their knowledge and experiences for junior staff to learn and perform the responsibilities… their helpfulness has made me so confident in completing my daily tasks.”
Working a job typically filled by a male employee, Sokmean has made it her mission to prove that women can effectively serve in this position as they can in any role. “I want to do this job because most people believe that it is hard for a female to work with a schedule that rotates 24/7, but I am a female and I want to show my own abilities in this job,” she said.
