Siem Reap Tourism Club: Growing Green at Angkor Wat
The historic Angkor World Heritage site, a popular tourist destination for travelers to the Kingdom, is the most iconic and culture-rich location in all of Cambodia.
The historic Angkor World Heritage site, a popular tourist destination for travelers to the Kingdom, is the most iconic and culture-rich location in all of Cambodia.
In an effort to protect the park’s many temples and improve forest coverage, Cambodia Airports donated to the Siem Reap Tourism Club (STC) to help organise a tree planting event in mid-July. More than 2,000 saplings were planted by volunteers from 50 hotels and businesses that gathered to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the local environment.
As an avid supporter of sustainable and environmentally-friendly causes in the Kingdom, Cambodia Airports was proud to contribute to the event and expand on a longstanding relationship with the STC, an organisation that aims to protect and improve tourism in and around the city of Siem Reap. Through this event and similar concerted efforts, Cambodia seeks to preserve its natural beauty and proudly maintain its title as the “Kingdom of Wonder”.
With Angkor Wat being Cambodia’s prime tourist attraction, it continues to draw millions of visitors annually. In the first seven months of 2018, the park was visited by more than 1.5 million tourists, representing a 9 percent increase from the year before. While the boost in park visitors represents improvements in the tourism industry, however, it also means that Cambodia's historic temples are seeing an increase in foot traffic that may have damaging effects.
