Sihanouk International Airport spreads its wings
Last month’s soft launch of the newly refurbished and expanded Sihanouk International Airport showcased a facility that plays a vital role in the transformation of Cambodia’s coastal jewel. With the rise in passengers using Sihanouk International Airport accelerating, Cambodia Airports has unveiled an ambitious, long-term expansion strategy for the coastal gateway that could see as much as $450 million invested in the airport by 2040.
The strategic plan includes a second terminal as well as a runway extension that will allow the airport to accommodate aircraft used on long-haul flights. This will see the airport upgraded to Code E, which will extend its international reach, as well as enhance synergy between all three of our airports in the Kingdom.
The strategy was announced during the soft launch of the existing terminal’s expansion and refurbishment on June 27. The high-profile event was presided over by H.E. Mao Havannal, Secretary of State at the Secretariat of Civil Aviation, H.E. Hor Monirath, Under-Secretary of State for Tourism, Preah Sihanouk Governor H.E. Yun Min, and Mr. Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and President of VINCI Airports, the parent company of Cambodia Airports.
The expansion of the airport allows it to now handle more than 1 million passengers a year, with the same unparalleled convenience and customer service offered at our other airports. Facilities have been expanded and new state-of-the-art equipment installed, while the façade of the terminal has been redesigned to ensure a welcoming and modern look that pays homage to Cambodian traditions as well as the local environment. The check-in area, boarding lounge and luggage areas have all been refitted. More immigration counters have been added, the number of seats in the departure lounge has more than tripled and a new conveyer belt has been added to speed up luggage collection.
Following our work on the terminal, Cambodia Airports is focusing on the runway. Its enlargement and extension – to 3,300 meters – is being undertaken with strict compliance to the environmental policies of VINCI Airports to prevent environmental damage and protect biodiversity.
