Two international airports complete expansion, third nearly finished
Strategic planning and careful implementation ensured no service interruptions for the record number of passengers last year.
Phnom Penh International Airport’s expansion was fully completed last year. It began with a renovation and extension of the departure concourse and concluded with an expansion of the Arrival Esplanade in December 2017.
The conveyor belts added in the luggage-claim area and the increase in counters at immigration control reduced time spent collecting baggage and quickened processing through immigration.
The redesign of the Esplanade, where arriving passengers are welcomed by family and friends, celebrates Khmer aesthetics and hospitality. Its open-space concept and sandstone-sculpture garden echo the artistry of Angkor Wat. This unique design is given a modern update at the Esplanade’s new Tourism Information Counter. It was inaugurated on January 23 of this year by HE Minister of Tourism Thong Khon.
The expansion also underscores Cambodia Airports’ commitment to sustainability, with new wastewater treatment plants in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh international airports demonstrating that environmental protection is embedded in our business model as one of the three pillars underpinning our CSR policy.
The expansion of Sihanouk International Airport is on schedule to be completed before summer this year, as tourism continues to surge in Cambodia's coastal region. The terminal's total floor space is expanding by 80 percent, with the number of seats in the departure lounge more than tripling. The terminal's new design incorporates the local environment with wave-like curves, natural colors and shaded areas.
