DESTINATION OF THE MONTH
Sihanoukville rising
The coastal resort of Sihanoukville has become the fastest growing town in the Gulf of Thailand, with its airport a key driver of its remarkable transformation.
Cambodia Airports received the concession to develop the facility in 2006, and moved swiftly to develop it. Cambodia Angkor Air opened the first route linking the resort's white-sand beaches to the ancient wonders Angkor Wat in Siem Reap in December 2011.
Sihanouk International Airport is seeing a surge in passengers, fueled in part by the synergy between all three of our international airports. Passenger growth at the airport rose to 133 percent year-on-year in May. Cambodian carrier JC Airlines also debuted its first route from Sihanouk on May 1, with twice weekly flights to Hangzhou.
The airport’s staggering growth is just beginning. The eight carriers -including Air Asia Berhad- that now operate from it, connect it to six cities in China, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City. Two new carriers – Cambodia Airways and Shandong Airlines – will add routes from Sihanouk International Airport in July and September, respectively.
