Double-digit growth continues in June as new routes open
Three carriers launch new routes linking Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to Chinese metropolises, as surge in passengers and cargo continues.
The rapid growth at all three of our airports continued in June, with Sihanouk International Airport once again taking the lead. The number of passengers using the coastal airport soared 93 percent year on year, while Phnom Penh and Siem Reap saw rises of 29 and 6 percent, respectively. Cargo shipments at Phnom Penh jumped a staggering 49 percent in June and reported a new record at nearly 7,000 tons for a single month.
This astonishing growth is bound to continue as carriers continue to add new routes and increase frequencies linking the airports to major metropolitan centers in China. Lanmei Airlines added two new routes linking Siem Reap with the historic city of Xi’an in northwest China and Jinan the capital of Shandong province. The first route was launched on June 6 and the second on June 19.
Domestic carrier JC Airlines continued its rapid expansion, adding a new route on June 20 connecting Phnom Penh with Sanya, a city located on the southern tip of Hainan Island, with three flights a week.
Fujian province-based Xiamen Air also added a new route on June 27 between Phnom Penh and Quanzhou, offering four flights a week to and from the largest city in Fujian province. The award-winning carrier has carried more than 200,000 passengers between Cambodia and China since its inaugural flight to Cambodia on June 29, 2014.
